Almost half of unplanned pediatric admissions result from general or neurosurgery procedures, according to a study reported by Family Practice News.
For the study, researchers analyzed data from 12,438 cases that were admitted to a single facility from January 2007 and December 2010. Of the 1,178 patients that were readmitted within 30 days, 27 percent had an initial general surgery and 26 percent had a neurosurgical procedure. The next highest readmission rates were linked to cardiac surgeries (18 percent) and orthopedic surgeries (10 percent).
The most common causes for 30-day readmissions among general surgery patients include infections (38 percent), gastrointestinal complications (28 percent) and respiratory complications (9 percent).
