Texas reported its first pediatric flu death of the 2019-20 season Nov. 15, marking the fifth such death nationwide.
The child was a 5-year-old from the Rio Grande area, according to a Nov. 15 tweet from the Texas Department of State Health Services. The child had not received a flu shot, officials said.
Texas flu activity is increasing and has now surpassed the state's flu activity baseline for the first time this season, according to the state health department.
