Five confirmed or probable cases of the mumps are under investigation at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., according to a university news release.
University health officials are working with the Tippecanoe County Health Department and the Indiana State Department of Health to locate and notify people who may have come into contact with the possibly infected individuals. The university has advised all members of the campus community to review their immunization records and obtain copies if necessary. The community has also been encouraged to inform themselves on the symptoms, transmission and prevention of mumps.
The mumps has recently been making a resurgence on college campuses, including cases at three other universities in Indiana, Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., Boston University, SUNY Buffalo in New York, and the University of North Carolina in Charlotte.
