Mumps cases at Mizzou pass 200

Since Aug. 22, 228 cases of the mumps have been detected among students at the University of Missouri in Columbia.

The latest numbers — released by the university Wednesday — mark a considerable increase from the 73 cases reported as of Nov. 28.

According to an update from the university, 190 of the infected students have recovered and are no longer contagious. The university health center is collaborating with local and state health officials to identify additional cases and prevent the spread of the highly communicable viral infection.

According to the CDC, mumps outbreaks in the United States hit a 10-year high in 2016.
