CDC issued a food safety alert tying a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Schwarzengrund infections to Butterball brand ground turkey.
Butterball recalled 78,000-plus pounds of ground turkey products March 13. The products were produced on July 7, 2018, and may be contaminated with Salmonella Schwarzengrund.
Thus far, six people have been infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella in three states: Minnesota, North Carolina and Wisconsin. No deaths have been reported, although one person was hospitalized. Illnesses began Dec. 19, 2018.
Symptoms of Salmonella infections include diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps. The illness lasts four to seven days and typically does not require treatment. However, in some cases hospitalization is required and the infection can spread from the intestines to the bloodstream.
