Mercy Medical Center earns Pinnacle Award for Severe Sepsis Improvement

Rockville Centre, N.Y.-based Catholic Health Services of Long Island has recognized Mercy Medical Center, also located in Rockville Centre, with the Pinnacle Award for Quality & Patient Safety for Sepsis Safety Improvement.

Mercy Medical Center earned the award by collecting baseline data and focusing efforts on four sepsis care indicators, including time to antibiotics, time to resuscitation, three-hour bundle compliance and six-hour bundle compliance. The hospital also created a multidisciplinary committee to review best practices, severe sepsis performance and outliers on a monthly basis, and then provide individual feedback to providers and nurses involved in each outlier case.

The hospital committee also modified order sets, educated staff on improvement efforts and identified additional areas for improvement. Ultimately, these changes — an many more — helped the hospital achieve 80 percent overall improvement on the time to antibiotic indicator, 135 percent overall improvement in the three-hour bundle and 180 percent overall improvement in the six-hour bundle.

Mercy Medical Center's success was recognized with the Pinnacle Award in CHS's acute care category. The award is part of the system's newly created performance improvement plan.

The CHS award was inspired by the Healthcare Association of New York State's Pinnacle Award for Quality & Patient Safety. It was created to help CHS honor those who promote improvements in healthcare delivery, according to CHS's executive vice president and system CMO Patrick O'Shaughnessy, DO.
