M.D. Anderson physicians largely unsatisfied with patient safety improvement

An internal survey administered by the University of Texas system found fewer than 40 percent of physicians at University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston are satisfied with improvements in patient safety at the hospital, according to a Houston Chronicle report.

The UT System conducted the survey following a fall 2013 faculty senate meeting that centered on patient safety concerns at the hospital, according to the report. Nearly 1,000 faculty members completed the survey.

The survey found 65 percent of respondents do not agree that "overall morale has improved as a result of recent changes made by the executive leadership," while 14 percent do agree with that statement.

Approximately one-half of respondents disagreed that executive leadership is open to faculty ideas and recommendations, compared to 23 percent of respondents who agreed.

Regarding clinical productivity expectations, 60 percent of respondents were dissatisfied, while 19 percent were satisfied.

Thirty-four percent of respondents were unsatisfied with improvements in patient safety, while 39 percent were satisfied.

Raymond Greenberg, MD, PhD, executive vice chancellor for health affairs of the UT System, wrote a letter to faculty that accompanied the survey results, saying improvements will be a work in progress.

"While there are some areas of perceived progress over the past year, there are areas that continue to be opportunities for improvement," he wrote. "We see this as a work in progress, since we know it takes time for significant change to permeate through an organization as large and complex as M.D. Anderson."
