The Lucian Leape Institute, a prominent patient safety think tank, has added two esteemed members to its ranks.

Don Berwick, MD, a senior fellow at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and former CMS administrator, and David Michaels, PhD, former assistant secretary of labor and a current professor of environmental and occupational health at George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health in Washington, D.C., were appointed to the Lucian Leape Institute, effective Monday.

Both experts have previous ties to the think tank. Dr. Berwick served as one of its founding members when the institute was launched by the National Patient Safety Foundation in 2007. Dr. Michaels previously served on the Lucian Leape Institute's 2012 roundtable addressing the health and safety of healthcare workers.

"It is a great honor to welcome two such distinguished and accomplished experts," said Tejal Gandhi, MD, chief clinical and safety officer of IHI and president of the Lucian Leape Institute. "Their expertise, leadership, and insight will be invaluable as we expand our focus on culture and leadership to advance the safety of patients and the workforce."

Announced in March, the merger between IHI and NPSF was effective Monday.
