Legionella bacteria found at Virginia hospital

Health officials detected Legionella bacteria at Richmond, Va.-based Johnston-Willis Hospital, reports NBC affiliate WWBT.

The hospital was one of four locations to test positive for the bacteria in Chesterfield County, Va. A spokesperson for Johnston-Willis Hospital said hospital leaders have been working closely with the health department since learning of the bacteria and "completed the recommended treatment plan" for its cooling system.

"The safety of our patients, visitors and staff is our top priority," the spokesperson told WWBT. "Infection control experts agree there is no evidence of transmission within the hospital and there has been no impact on patient care."

The Virginia Department of Health has confirmed 10 cases of Legionnaires' in Chesterfield County since May 1. However, health officials said there is no proof of a connection between those cases and the presence of Legionella bacteria at the new locations.
