Hospital units with 60 percent or more caregivers reporting exposure to leadership walkarounds have better patient safety cultures, according to an article published in the American Journal of Medical Quality.
Researchers surveyed 706 hospital units across 49 hospitals in a nonprofit healthcare system. Units with six of 10 caregivers reporting having seen at least one leadership walkaround had greater patient safety risk reduction, a higher proportion of feedback on actions taken in response to walkarounds and an overall stronger culture of patient safety.
Researchers concluded leadership walkarounds can be effective as a tool for patient safety improvement if they have enough exposure to caregivers.
