Poor access to primary and preventive care in California contributed to 335,000 preventable adult hospitalizations in 2009, according to an analysis by California Watch.
The statistic is based on hospital inpatient discharges in 2009 and 13 prevention quality indicators, such as chest pains and dehydration, according to the report. The number of preventable adult hospitalizations in 2009 was up from 2008, when there were 317,050 preventable hospitalizations.
Preventable hospitalizations cost California approximately $3.6 billion annually.
