More than 500 leading hospitals across the country have joined the Healthier Hospitals Initiative, which aims to foster greater adoption of environmentally friendly practices.
HHI's sponsoring health systems include Advocate Health Care in Oak Brook, Ill., Bon Secours Health System in Marriottsville, Md., Catholic Health Initiatives in Denver, Dignity Health in San Francisco, Hospital Corporation of America in Nashville, Tenn., Kaiser Permanente in Oakland, Calif., Partners HealthCare in Boston, Tenet Health Systems in Dallas and Vanguard Health Systems in Nashville.
The new campaign urges hospital industry to commit to the three-year initiative to improve the health and safety of patients, staff and communities through the following steps:
• Engage in leadership on environmental health and sustainability
• Serve healthier foods and beverages
• Reduce energy use
• Reduce waste and recycle
• Use safer chemicals
• Purchase environmentally preferable products
During the next three years, HHI will gather data and metrics from participating hospitals to demonstrate the impact these strides are having on the health and safety of patients, workers and communities, as well as on reducing healthcare expenditures.
