The Joint Commission has developed a new medication compounding certification program to help healthcare organizations comply with state and pharmacy board regulations.
Compounding pharmacies were put under the microscope after a deadly multistate meningitis outbreak in 2012 stemmed from contaminated compounded medication.

"After assessing the need for a more focused and specialized evaluation of facilities' sterile compounding practices, the Joint Commission recognized it was important to design a program that would help organizations reduce risk and harm," said Robert Campbell, PharmD, a surveyor with the Joint Commission's Hospital Accreditation Program. "Organizations that successfully achieve this certification have demonstrated compliance with nationally accepted standards of practice for sterile medication compounding."
Any compounding pharmacy operating in or shipping to states with regulations that require compliance with the United States Pharmacopeial Convention General Chapters 797 or 795 can earn the certification
