Joint Commission Names 620 Hospitals Top Performers in Key Quality Measures

The Joint Commission has recognized 620 hospitals as Top Performers on Key Quality Measures in its report, "Improving America's Hospitals: The Joint Commission's Annual Report on Quality and Safety 2012" (pdf).

The report includes performance data on 45 measures from 3,300 eligible Joint Commission-accredited hospitals. Three new accountability measure sets were included in this year's report: stroke, venous thromboembolism and inpatient psychiatric services.

The Top Performers program is in its second year. It recognizes hospitals that had 95 percent performance on a composite score of all accountability measures, including measures that had fewer than 30 eligible cases or patients; and 95 percent performance on each individual accountability measure, not including those with fewer than 30 eligible cases or patients.

At 620, the number of hospitals that met these requirements increased by more than 50 percent from last year and represents 18 percent of Joint Commission-accredited hospitals. Of the 620 hospitals, 244 were also recognized as Top Performers last year.
