The Joint Commission and the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses have issued a statement to urge surgical teams to honor National Time Out Day on June 12 to raise awareness of the use of 'time outs' to help prevent surgical errors.
A 'time out' is utilized by a surgical team prior to the start of a procedure to help prevent wrong-site, wrong-side, wrong-procedure or wrong-person surgery.
Resources for implementing time outs can be found on the AORN website.
