Joint Commission appoints inaugural Editor-in-Chief for quality, patient safety journal

Joint Commission Resources has made David W. Baker, MD, executive vice president of the Division of Healthcare Quality Evaluation at The Joint Commission, the editor-in-chief of The Joint Commission Journal on Quality and Patient Safety.

Although the award-winning publication is not new, this is the first time it will be lead by an editor-in-chief.

In this new position, Dr. Baker will oversee the editorial direction of the Journal, which publishes monthly and includes original manuscripts, case studies, program and project reports, reports of new methodologies or new applications of methodologies, research studies, commentaries and feature articles.

Dr. Baker is well-known in the medical community for his research focused on health literacy, racial and ethnic disparities, language barriers in healthcare, health outcomes for the uninsured and the use of EHRs to measure and improve quality. He expressed excitement regarding the new role.

"The Journal has an outstanding reputation for publishing rigorous, real-world studies of strategies to improve quality and patient safety," said Dr. Baker. "As editor-in-chief, I hope to build upon this foundation and develop new ways to deliver advanced thinking, strategies and leading practices to the healthcare industry."
