Hospitals participating in the Iowa Healthcare Collaborative Hospital Engagement Network experienced significant quality improvements and cut healthcare costs by $51 million in 2013.
Overall, the 127 participating hospitals reduced catheter-associated urinary tract infections by 43 percent, adverse drug events by 28 percent, central line-associated bloodstream infections in the intensive care unit by 24 percent, surgical site infections by 24 percent, patient falls by 23 percent and avoidable remissions by 11 percent, according to a news release.

Additionally, the participating hospitals reduced overall patient stays by 17,758 days.
The initiative is part of the federal Partnership for Patients initiative, which helps hospitals build and develop infrastructure, expertise and organizational culture to improve healthcare.
