The Infectious Diseases Society of America named seven award winners during IDWeek 2019, taking place Oct. 2 to Oct. 6, in Washington, D.C.
The award winners are:
● Alexander Fleming Lifetime Achievement Award: W. Michael Scheld, MD, the Bayer-Gerald L. Mandell professor of infectious diseases, a professor of medicine and a clinical professor of neurosurgery at the University of Virginia School of Medicine in Richmond
● Henderson Award for Outstanding Contributions to Public Health: Catherine M. Wilfert, MD, scientific director of the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation
● Watanakunakorn Clinician Award: Virginia D. Banks, MD, an infectious diseases physician with Northeast Ohio Infectious Disease Associates in Youngstown.
● Walter E. Stamm Mentor Award: David L. Thomas, MD, the Stanhope Bayne Jones professor of medicine and chief of the infectious diseases division at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore.
● Oswald Avery Award for Early Achievement: Nasia Safdar, MD, medical director of infection control at Madison-based University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics
● Society Citation Award: Steven K. Schmitt, MD, staff physician in the department of infectious disease at the Cleveland Clinic, and Brian S. Schwartz, MD, an associate professor of clinical medicine at the University of California-San Francisco.
● Clinical Teacher Award: William L. Salzer, MD, who died Sept. 29, worked at University of Missouri School of Medicine in Columbia
