Indiana has released its first ever report on state of healthcare-associated infections within its hospitals.
The 2012 Indiana Healthcare Associated Infections Report compiles data from 119 hospitals through the State Department of Health, which requires hospitals to report on central line-associated bloodstream infections in all intensive care units, surgical site infections for abdominal hysterectomies and colon surgeries and catheter-associated urinary tract infections in all intensive care units.
The state's HAI reporting rules took effect Oct. 28, 2011, and hospitals began reporting data Jan. 1, 2012.
While Indiana's CLABSI and abdominal hysterectomy SSI rates were 41 percent and 39 percent lower than the national average respectively, the report found rates of CAUTI were 12 percent higher than the national average. Colon surgery SSI rates were on par with national trends.
