The Illinois Hospital Association's newest report on the more than 200 hospitals and health systems in the state shows that there were 843 fewer cases of preventable patient harm in 2012 than 2011, resulting in $18 million savings, according to a report from the Chicago Sun Times.
Preventable harms considered were central line-associated bloodstream infections, pressure ulcers, ventilator-associated pneumonia, catheter-associated urinary tract infections, patient falls, venous thromboembolism and adverse events during the birthing process.
While preventable harms decreased, hospital readmissions remained stagnant at about 14 percent, according to the report.
