Complications from sepsis may contribute to half of hospital deaths and nearly one-quarter of hospital costs, according to research published in JAMA. The prevalence of this condition, combined with a shifting reimbursement landscape, makes it more important than ever for large health systems to take advantage of available resources to combat sepsis.
Sepsis often proves difficult to diagnose as it comes on quickly and can be easily confused with other conditions. Failure to identify and treat the condition in a timely manner can have deadly consequences. However, properly assessing patients for their individualized risk of sepsis could help improve outcomes.
Data platforms that use predictive analytics can be implemented in the early identification of patients at high risk for sepsis. Orlando Health — a large health system that serves nearly 2 million people annually — and Vigilanz Intelligence have partnered to apply predictive models through the Vigilanz platform to promote the early identification of patients at risk for sepsis.
On Jan. 26, Eric Rose, Pharm. D, manager in corporate clinical decision support at Orlando Health, will join Adam Klass, chief technology officer with VigiLanz, and Bart Abban, PhD, director of analytics and data science with VigiLanz, to discuss the development of predictive models for sepsis risk and how such models can improve outcomes. The speakers will also share an update from a pilot program for the identification patients at risk for sepsis.
