Arizona has reported 212 cases of hepatitis A this year, according to a Fox News report.
The cases are mostly concentrated in the Tucson and metro Phoenix areas. The outbreak began in November 2018 and has continued to spread despite efforts to stem it. Several cases have been reported among the homeless, those with housing instability and illicit drug users.
Hepatitis A is a liver disease that can be spread via contaminated objects, food or drink, according to the CDC. Its symptoms include fever, vomiting, stomach pain and jaundice.
Arizona health officials are trying to step up vaccinations in the state, particularly in Maricopa and Pima counties. Vaccination against hepatitis A is given in two doses, six months apart.
