Henry Ford Hospital's Sepsis Protocol Becomes National Standard

Detroit-based Henry Ford Health System announced the National Quality Forum endorsed sepsis practices developed at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.

NQF endorsed this measure when it announced the endorsement of two additional infectious disease measures earlier this month.

Emanuel Rivers, MD, MPH, vice chairman and research director of Henry Ford's department of emergency medicine, developed the protocol to treat sepsis as part of a three-year research study. The protocol, Early Goal Directed Therapy, has shown to decrease the mortality rate of sepsis patients from 40 to 50 percent to less than 25 percent, according to the news release.

The practice consists of early detection of sepsis, antibiotics and aggressive treatment in the first six hours, including steps to quickly restore the supply of oxygen to vital organs. Henry Ford implemented EGDT as a standard treatment for sepsis in its emergency department and intensive care units.
