Healthgrades — an online resource for information on hospitals and physicians — announced the recipients of the 2018 Women's Care Awards.
The Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award, Labor and Delivery Excellence Award and the 2018 Obstetrics and Gynecology Excellence Award recognize U.S. hospitals showing superior outcomes in women's care services.
Healthgrades looked at patient outcome data for all patients made available in 15 states and the District of Columbia from 2014 through 2016. State data availability is subject to annual changes because of data release time frames as well as new regulations and laws.
Healthgrades used this data to determine the highest performing hospitals in women's health, and it revealed variations in quality between hospitals that received the Healthgrades awards and those that didn't.
Three things to know about the awards:
1. Gynecologic surgery excellence award. This award recognizes the top 10 percent of all evaluated hospitals that provided outstanding performance in gynecologic surgery, including hysterectomies and other female reproductive system-related surgeries. Healthgrades evaluated 676 eligible hospitals in 15 states and the District of Columbia and awarded 68 hospitals for 2018.
2. Labor and delivery excellence award. This distinction highlights the top 10 percent of all evaluated hospitals for exceptional care given to mothers during labor and delivery. Healthgrades evaluated 1,043 eligible hospitals in 15 states and the District of Columbia and awarded 106 hospitals this year.
3. Obstetrics and gynecology excellence award. This award showcases hospitals for having exceptional clinical outcomes while caring for women in childbirth, as well as during and after gynecologic surgeries and procedures.
