Health officials investigate 8-state Salmonella outbreak linked to dried coconut: 5 things to know

The Food and Drug Administration, CDC and state health officials are investigating an outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium linked to raw and dried coconut products, according to a CDC outbreak announcement published March 21.

Here are five things to know.

1. Investigators identified dried and raw coconut products from the food distributor International Harvest and grocery store chain Vitamin Cottage Natural Food Markets as the source of the outbreak.

2. The outbreak caused 13 infections across eight states as of March 20. The earliest reported illness occurred September 22, 2017. Three infections resulted in hospitalization.

3. The states affected in the outbreak are California with five cases; Oregon with two cases; and Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Missouri, Texas and Utah with one case each.

4. International Harvest recalled its contaminated coconut products March 16. Vitamin Cottage Natural Food Markets issued a recall March 19.

5. In February, CDC reported the likely end of a Salmonella outbreak linked to contaminated frozen coconut, which resulted in 27 infections across nine states.
