The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released its CDC Health Disparities and Inequalities Report – United States, 2013, the second report of its kind bringing attention of the disparities in health determinants and healthcare access among different groups of people in the country.
The report examines existing disparities in death, illness, use of healthcare, behavior risk factors for disease, environmental hazards and social determinants of health among race, nationality, gender, age and educational divisions.
"It is clear that more needs to be done to address the gaps and to better assist Americans disproportionately impacted by the burden of poor public health," said the director of the CDC's Office of Public Health, Chesley Richards, MD, in a news release.
Health-determining factors new to the report this year are access to healthy food, chronic disease activity limitations, work-related injury and illness, health-related quality of life, periodontitis, proximity to major highways, tuberculosis and unemployment.
