The California Department of Public Health has released the annual healthcare-associated infections report for 2013. The report revealed most infections — save Clostridium difficile — have decreased.
Highlighted below are five findings from the report.
- In 2013, 424 acute-care hospitals reported 18,780 HAIs to the CDPH.
- Between 2011 and 2013, C. diff infections increased 5 percent.
- HAIs that decreased in 2013 include:
- Central line-associated bloodstream infections (48 percent decrease since 2008)
- Methicillin-resistance Staphylococcus aureus (down 27 percent since 2011)
- Surgical site infections (down 44 percent since 2008)
The 2013 report marks the fifth year CDPH has published California hospital HAI data.
The state also published its report on influenza vaccinations among healthcare personnel statewide, which found 85 percent of California hospitals achieved more than 60 percent vaccination among employees, compared to 71 percent in 2012.
