Greenville Hospital System in Columbia, S.C., is warning 11 patients that they may have been exposed to a rare brain disease, according to a New England Cable News report.
A patient who underwent surgery at the hospital system earlier this year was diagnosed with Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease, which eventually leads to death. Hospital officials reassured patients that employees properly sterilized all surgery instruments but want to take extra precaution in this unusual case, according to the report.
The disease can be detected through autopsy or brain biopsy.
