An international group of experts will work to accelerate the creation of new vaccines through a $35 million grant from the National Institutes of Health.

Three things to know:

1. Erica Ollmann Saphire, PhD, a professor at the La Jolla (Calif.) Institute for Immunology, will lead the five-year effort called the Viral Immunotherapeutic Consortium.

2. The consortium comprises structural biologists, virologists, immunologists, clinicians and public health experts from across the globe.

3. The group's main focus will be researching and developing therapeutic candidates for Ebola virus, alphaviruses and Lassa virus, which all pose a major threat to global health.
