Sarah Sellers, a 26-year-old full time nurse anesthetist at Tucson, Ariz.-based Banner Health Center, stunned the nation April 16 when she crossed the finish line in second place at the prestigious Boston Marathon as a virtual unknown, according to The Washington Post.
Here are six things to know.
1. Ms. Sellers was the runner up in the 26.2 mile race with a time of 2 hours 44 minutes and 4 seconds.
2. Despite her impressive finish time, she was not listed among the elite field, as this was only the second marathon she ever completed. Unlike many of the top women in the field, Ms. Sellers had no sponsors.
3. "I mean, I still can't believe I finished second," Ms. Sellers told The Washington Post. "I'm going to wake up and this will be a dream."
4. Ms. Sellers is a full-time nurse anesthetist who had to fit in her training at 4 a.m. before reporting to work or after 7 p.m., when she finishes her 10-hour shift at Banner Health Center.
5. After the race, Ms. Sellers told The Washington Post she has no plans to scale back on her nursing job because "It's really rewarding and gives me perspective on life."
6. The 2018 Boston Marathon was a race full of surprises. The winner, Desiree Linden, made history as the first American woman to win the race in 33 years.
