Surgeons at the Cleveland Clinic made history this week, performing the first uterus transplant in the U.S. during a nine-hour surgical procedure.
The hospital began screening uterus transplants candidates in 2015 as part of a clinical trial. The uterus used in the transplant surgery came from a deceased organ donor.
As of Thursday, the 26-year-old patient is in stable condition.
The Cleveland Clinic has released few other details about the patient and the procedure at this time. Members of the surgical team are scheduled to hold a press conference on the milestone next week.
