First percutaneous procedure on an umbilical hernia in US performed at a Northwell hospital

Agostino Cervone, MD, president of medical staff and director of General Robotic Surgery at Northwell Health's Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, N.Y., recently performed the first umbilical hernia repair with percutaneous laparoscopic instrumentation in the U.S.

The instrumentation was created by medical device provider Teleflex. The Teleflex system allowed Dr. Cervone to perform the procedure without inserting a trocar, making the operation minimally invasive and leaving the patient with an almost unnoticeable scar the size of a pencil tip.

"Using Percuvance [the Teleflex system] allowed me to operate with no additional training yet provided less trauma and a faster recovery time for my patient," said Dr. Cervone. "I would use Percuvance again as it was a smooth transition for me and the patient benefited from the procedure as well."
