Emory University creates interactive map to illustrate illness burden of hepatitis C

HepVu, an online resource created by the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University in Atlanta launched an online interactive map to create a visual representation of the disease burden throughout the United States pertaining to the hepatitis C virus.

The map provides a state-by-state breakdown of the nation's hepatitis C epidemic. Approximately 3.9 million Americans carry hepatitis C antibodies, which are indicative of either past or current infections.

"HepVu empowers hepatitis advocates, state health departments, and policy makers to use data-driven tools to push for better programs to provide testing, care and treatment for HCV for people in need of these services across the nation," said Patrick Sullivan, PhD, professor of epidemiology at Emory and principal scientist for HepVu. "By mapping the epidemic, HepVu helps us understand which states are most impacted by Hepatitis C, and where we need to focus our screening and treatment resources."
