Since the beginning of May, the number of confirmed Elizabethkingia anophelis cases in the state of Wisconsin has remained at 60. There is one additional case currently under investigation and four more that cannot be confirmed as infections related to the outbreak because there are no longer specimens available for testing.
The number of deaths linked to the infection in the state has also remained at 19.
The source of the outbreak remains unknown, according to the CDC and the Wisconsin Department of Health Services. The Wisconsin strain has also been linked to one death in Michigan and Illinois respectively.
There have been no updates from the Illinois Department of Health on the strain of Elizabethkingia that infected 10 Illinois residents — this strain has been determined to be unrelated to the strain responsible for the Wisconsin outbreak.
