Watertown, Mass.-based athenahealth announced Friday it will begin sharing population health data from its cloud-based national healthcare network while the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention operates at reduced capacity.
athenahealth collects data from approximately 44,000 medical providers and 40 million patient records across the nation.
The electronic health record company's announcement comes at a time when the CDC has discontinued its "nonessential" influenza and other communicative disease tracking programs due to the lack of government funding, which forced the agency to furlough nearly 9,000 employees until further notice earlier this week.
