Ebola survivor to donate blood to help treat Dr. Rick Sacra

Ebola survivor Kent Brantly, MD, will donate his blood to help treat Rick Sacra, MD, who is currently suffering from Ebola virus disease, according to a Fox News report.

Drs. Brantly and Sacra have the same blood type, and Omaha-based Nebraska Medical Center, where Dr. Sacra is being treated, confirmed that he has received two transfusions.

Dr. Brantly, who contracted the virus in Liberia in July, was discharged in August. He was treated with an experimental drug called ZMapp. It was not confirmed, however, if the drug helped cure the disease. Dr. Brantly also received blood from an Ebola survivor.

According to officials, there is mixed evidence regarding whether blood from survivors can help Ebola patients, according to the report.

Thus far, four Americans have been infected with the virus. The virus has claimed approximately 1,848 lives as of Aug. 31, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
