Ebola spreading at fastest rate yet in Congo, says WHO

Ebola is spreading in the Democratic Republic of Congo at the fastest rate since the outbreak started in August 2018, the World Health Organization said April 1, according to Reuters.

Four things to know:

 1. Health officials reported a record number of new Ebola infections in the past two weeks. They identified 57 new cases in the week ending March 23 and another 72 cases in the week ending March 30.

2. The spike in cases came just one week after the WHO said the outbreak was well-contained and noted the rate of new cases had leveled out to about 25 per week.

3. In total, health officials confirmed 194 new cases and 119 deaths in March, making it the outbreak's most severe month yet, reports CIDRAP News.

4. As of March 31, health officials have reported 1,082 confirmed and probable Ebola infections linked to the outbreak, along with 676 deaths. Another 279 suspected cases are still under investigation.
