Ebola patient dies at Nebraska Medical Center

An Ebola patient who was brought to The Nebraska Medical Center from Sierra Leone over the weekend has died in the Omaha hospital.

The patient, Martin Salia, a surgeon, arrived at the hospital Saturday. He was the third Ebola patient treated at Nebraska Medical Center, but was much sicker than the other Ebola patients who have been flown to the U.S. from West Africa for treatment, according to an NBC News report.

"Dr. Salia was extremely critical when he arrived here, and unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we weren't able to save him," said Phil Smith, MD, the medical director of the hospital's biocontainment unit, according to NBC News.

Dr. Salia was a native of Sierra Leone and a legal U.S. resident. He was working in Sierra Leone at a hospital when he contracted the disease, which is widespread in the country and has taken the lives of more than 1,180 people there, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
