Ebola cases fall in Congo, but officials hesitant to declare outbreak's end

The ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo seems to be waning, according to The New York Times.

Here are three things to know:

1. As of Sept. 2, the WHO reported 91 confirmed and 30 probable Ebola cases linked to the outbreak, including 51 confirmed and 31 probable deaths.

2. Only a few Ebola cases appear each week, and two Ebola treatment centers in the Congo's North Kivu Province now house less than 30 patients in their 78 beds.

"We cannot say the outbreak is under control yet," Dr. Oly Ilunga, the country's health minister, told The New York Times. "While the number of confirmed cases has slowed down lately, we must remain vigilant. An Ebola outbreak works in waves, and the first wave hit us hard."

3. This first wave was made up of people infected before health workers came to the area. The second wave, made up of more than 3,500 family members, neighbors and medical workers exposed to individuals with the virus, are still in their "incubation periods," according to The New York Times.
