E. coli outbreak linked to flour sickens 17

An outbreak of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli O26 infections linked to flour has sickened 17 people in eight states, according to the CDC.

Baker's Corner All Purpose Flour may be the source of the E. coli infection, and ADM Milling Co. and Aldi recalled 5-pound bags of the flour May 23.

The illnesses began on dates ranging from Dec. 11, 2018, to April 18, and three hospitalizations have been reported. No deaths have occurred. People have been sickened in California, Connecticut, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.

Shiga toxin-producing E. coli causes diarrhea that can be bloody, stomach cramps, and in some cases, hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure.
