Preliminary data show single-use echocardiogram wires are not any more effective in reducing the number of intensive care unit infections than reusable echocardiogram wires, according to a MedPage Today report.
Researchers found no statistical difference in the rate of infections between single-use and reusable ECG wires.
Nancy Albert, PhD, an author of the study, said disposable ECG wires are not a guaranteed fix for ICUs with an HAI problem. "You may be better served, if you're spending money to try to reduce infections, to get to the root cause of it, which may be hand washing or inadequate attention to detail in cleaning," she said in the report.
