Contrast agents could provide an efficient means for physicians to detect infections through imaging, rather than unnecessarily prescribing antibiotics, according to a Technology Review report.
Two contrast agents currently in preclinical research are designed to attach to bacterial cell walls, allowing physicians to detect the bacteria when patients undergo imaging. Another imaging mechanism, called the Georgia Probe, can detect smaller bacteria than the two previously mentioned contrast agents. Although the contrast agents may be available for wide research soon, experts are unsure of how many researchers may be willing to invest in expensive imaging technology.
