Seventeen medical specialty societies representing more than 350,000 physicians have released a total of 18 lists, each describing five potentially unnecessary tests, treatments or medication therapies as part of the Choosing Wisely campaign.
The Choosing Wisely campaign is an initiative of the ABIM Foundation that includes medical specialty societies aiming to raise awareness of potentially unnecessary or harmful tests and procedures that providers and patients should question. With this recent addition of 90 tests and treatments, the campaign has identified more than 130 tests and procedures to question.
Fifteen medical specialty societies will release new lists later in 2013; some of these societies will be releasing their second or third lists as part of the campaign.
Coinciding with this release of 18 new lists, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has given a $2.5 million, 28-month grant to the ABIM Foundation for the Choosing Wisely campaign, according to the release.
