The CDC is expected to soon update protocol for what healthcare workers should wear when treating Ebola patients, revising the guidelines so workers show no skin, according to a report in The Boston Globe.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention currently lists PPE recommendations for Ebola treatment as "forthcoming" at the time of publication. The CDC is looking into reviews from experts and government officials, according to the report.
The new guidelines are expected to include the following:
- Full-body suits
- Hoods to protect healthcare workers' necks
- A site manager to oversee putting on and taking off personal protective equipment
- A buddy system for workers to check each other on the way into and out of the isolation unit
It is possible that improper PPE played a role in how two nurses at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas contracted the Ebola virus after treating Thomas Eric Duncan, who died from Ebola in the hospital earlier this month.
