CDC tallies 400+ new Salmonella infections related to backyard poultry since June

The CDC is investigating 10 different multistate Salmonella outbreaks linked to poultry kept in residential backyards, according to a July 13 update.

Here are five things to know.

1. Health officials identified 790 illnesses caused by Salmonella exposure across 48 states and the District of Columbia from January 4 to June 20.

2. The most recent update marks a 418-case increase since June 1.

3. While no deaths were reported among the outbreaks, at least 174 people have been hospitalized due to the infection.

4. Several different strains ofSalmonella caused the outbreaks, including Salmonella Enteritidis, Salmonella Hadar and Salmonella Typhimurium, among others.

5. To avoid Salmonella infections, the CDC recommends individuals wash hands thoroughly with soap and water after touching live poultry and not permitting children under 5 years old to handle chicks, ducklings or other live poultry live poultry without adult supervision.
