CDC seeks comments on updated infection control guidelines for healthcare workers

The CDC is seeking public comment on a draft guidance that would update existing policies on providing occupational infection prevention and control services for healthcare personnel.

Here are three things to know:.

1. The draft would update two sections of the agency's existing guidance first published in 1998 that highlight protocols for infection control infrastructure and routine practices.

2. The agency's Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee has been working to update the guidance since 2015. The advisory group comprises various stakeholders with expertise in public health, infectious diseases and regulatory issues.

3. The finalized version of the draft guidance will not become a federal rule or regulation, but rather will serve as a resource for healthcare leaders to implement effective occupational infection control services.

4. Comments on the draft are due Dec. 14.
