CDC: Heart Disease, Cancer Death Rates Decreased

The life expectancy at birth increased 1.7 years for females and 2.1 years for males from 2000 to 2010, according to a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics.

The report, "Health, United States, 2012: With Special Feature on Emergency Care," summarizes the health status and healthcare service utilization of Americans over time. Here are some other statistics for the period 2000 to 2010, unless noted:


•    The infant mortality rate decreased 11 percent.
•    The heart disease death rate decreased 30 percent.
•    The cancer death rate decreased 13 percent.
•    The prevalence of obesity among children two to five years old increased from 7 percent between 1988 and 1994 to 10 percent from 1999 to 2000.
