The California Department of Public Health has issued penalties to eight hospitals totaling $450,000 for failing to meet licensing requirements that, if ignored, may cause serious patient injury or death. The hospitals include:
Bakersfield (Calif.) Memorial Hospital — $50,000 penalty for failure to follow patient monitoring and intervention policies. Second administrative penalty.

Fountain Valley (Calif.) Regional Hospital and Medical Center — $75,000 for failure to follow patient assessment and advocacy policies. Fourth administrative penalty.
Garden Grove (Calif.) Hospital and Medical Center — $50,000 for failure to follow safe medication distribution and administration policies. Third administrative penalty.
Los Angeles Community Hospital — $50,000 for failure to follow safe medication distribution and administration policies. Second administrative penalty.
Mercy Medical Center (Merced) — $75,000 for failure to follow safe medication distribution and administration policies. Second administrative penalty
Regional Medical Center of San Jose (Calif.) — $50,000 for failure to follow policies for safe distribution and administration of medical gas. First administrative penalty.
Ronald Regan UCLA Medical Center (Los Angeles) — $75,000 for retention of a foreign object during surgery as a result of lapses in adherence to surgical safety policies. Second administrative penalty.
St. Joseph Hospital (Orange, Calif.) — $50,000 for failure to follow patient care policies and procedures. Third administrative penalty.
