Nearly half (46 percent) of all experience leaders report that physicians at their institutions are only passively engaged in experience improvement efforts, according to a research report from the Experience Innovation Network, a part of Vocera.
Additionally, only 13 percent of the experience leaders surveyed reported having physicians leading experience improvement efforts.
"We fall somewhere between obstructive and enthusiastic," reported one anonymous survey respondent described only as a patient experience officer for a nonprofit health system. "Physicians are willing to get on board, but it really requires providing quality results in the industry and convincing them of the benefits and gains as providers and patients."
To gain stronger physician leadership in improvement efforts, experience leaders cited the following six aspects as critical.
1. Visible physician leaders — 29 percent
2. Feedback and data — 19 percent
3. Aligned incentives — 13 percent
4. Training and tools — 12 percent
5. A burning platform or catalyst — 12 percent
6. Accountability — 11 percent
