Blood infection linked to 17 deaths in Wisconsin now found in Michigan

Officials have confirmed that a western Michigan resident died after contracting Elizabethkingia, according to MLive.

A recent outbreak of this rare blood infection has affected 54 people in Wisconsin, 17 of whom have died. According to the Wisconsin Department of Health services, the outbreak is primarily ailing people over 65 already living with significant health issues.

While infections are being discovered primarily in hospitals and nursing facilities, the initial source of the outbreak remains a mystery. The CDC is investigating the outbreak and has referred to it as the largest of its kind, According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
